What do you do? – ¿a qué te dedicas? / ¿cuál es tu profesión?
La respuesta: I’m a / an… I work as a / an…
E.g.
I’m a chef / I’m an architect
I work as a marketing consultant / an engineer
Otra opción puede ser Where do you work?
I work at + a company
E.g.
I work at Inditex group
I work for + a company / a person
E.g.
I work for Inditex group
I work for Amancio Ortega, I’m his personal assistant.
I work in + a department / general area-industry.
(Also in + a place, city, country)
E.g.
I work in sales
I work in finance
I work in the banking industry
I work in the health sector
I work in London / in Milan
I work with + people / things
E.g.
I work with the sales team
I work with designers around the world
I work with international providers
I work with public and private health institutions
Describing your day to day work – describir tu día a día en el trabajo
I’m responsible for something / doing something
E.g.
I’m responsible for the accounts
I’m responsible for managing projects
I’m in charge of something / doing something
E.g.
I’m in charge of the marketing area
I’m in charge of controlling travel expenses
My job involves…
E.g.
My job involves taking care of our clients and supervising everything is fine with our products.
Algunos verbos que pueden ser de utilidad
I have to… deal with / manage / supervise / organise / plan / train / help / build / develop / test / design / repair / check / analyse…
Other vocabulary related to work – otro tipo de vocabulario relacionado con el trabajo
I’m unemployed at the moment
I’m between jobs at the moment (ésta es una manera más «eufemística» de decir que estás desempleado)
Si estás desempleado lo más probable es que estés looking for a job, entonces ves una oferta que te interesa y te inscribes, es decir, you apply for a job. Puede que consigas una entrevista, to get a job interview y con suerte hasta consigues el trabajo to get a job y te contratan they hire you (or you are hired).
To hire someone/ to be hired (mejor utilizar este verbo que el verbo «contract»).
E.g.
They hired a team of 3 assistants to help us.
She was hired after doing an excellent interview.
I’m self-employed
I work as a freelance
O a lo mejor incluso has montado tu propia empresa to set up a company y diriges tu negocio to run a business.
Volvamos a lo de ser empleado, si eres bueno puede que consigas un aumento de sueldo a pay rise or incluso que te asciendan to promote / to be promoted.
Si no están contentos con tu trabajo puede que te despidan, you are fired / they fire you. (to be fired / to fire someone)
E.g.
I was laid off because my company had financial problems.
I’m going to leave my job (neutral)
I’m going to quit my job (informal)
I’m going to resign from my job (formal)
E.g.
I’m (pre) retired. I can’t wait to my retirement.

Let’s go!
To have difficulty
It’s difficult / hard to (do something)
I find it difficult / hard to (do something)
E.g.
I had difficulties to find my first job.
It is hard for him to understand complex technical texts.
I find it difficult to speak on the phone in English.
To have problems with (something)
To have trouble with (something)
To have problems (doing something)
To have trouble (doing something)
E.g.
He usually has trouble with the wi-fi connection.
We will have problems with the budget.
They had problems installing the new version.
She has trouble writing mails in English.
To face a problem / a situation – enfrentarse a un problema
E.g.
We faced some problems when we launched the website.
To run into difficulties– encontrarse con dificultades
E.g.
They run into difficulties to change the trip arrangements.
To manage
To handle
To tackle
E.g.
We need to tackle this problem as soon as possible.
Customer service usually handles problems with the orders.
He will deal with the difficulties of the marketing campaign.
To solve (a problem)- resolver
To overcome (difficulties)- superar
E.g.
We called a technician to solve the internet problem.
You can overcome difficulties by talking to your team.
To fix
E.g.
She didn’t need help to fix some of the problems.
There was a problem with the printer but we fixed it quickly.
When I first worked in a different country I didn’t have many difficulties to find a job but I had trouble finding a good company to work with. At first I found it hard to speak in a foreign language because people had trouble understanding me. I manage to overcome this situation by talking to everybody, without being afraid.
I realize that most of the difficulties I faced, were solved with more communication.
